It’s another busy half a year at TAC. We have lots of events planned, from classical concerts to live theatre for children, comedy, cabaret and jazz. There are dozens of creative workshops plus all our regular art, dance and drama classes. Browse our program below, by clicking each month to view the full schedule of events on offer. July
July’s NAIDOC week celebrations include a documentary film screaming, poetry readings, a linocut printmaking workshop, and music and weaving in Yuma Yarn. The exhibtion program continues with True: Kevin Gilbert (1933 to 1993), From Country and Wish you Were Here. TAC’s music program showcases eight time Aria Award-winning pianist/composer Paul Grabowsky in concert and Divine Devilles for Lakeside at 5. School holidays see the return of our popular Make A Mini Musical program with Mr. Tim and Ms Nat, and term-based art, drama and dance classes – for kids and adults – resume for term three.
TAC’s regular monthly programs bring the creative community together for Friday night life drawing, Saturday morning writing sessions hosted by MARION, after work lakeside jazz, and an informal Saturday afternoon networking group for artists. Recently added into the program, are free weekly drop-in art making sessions on Friday mornings. Woden Arts Chat and Make Art class for migrant women, is free and new members are welcome to join them each week at the Woden Library.
August
In August, the music program welcomes celebrated singers Trish Delaney-Brown, Sam Walton and Bri Cowlishaw for a feature concert and harmony singing workshop with Lyhra. Australia’s sorceress of percussion Claire Edwardes features in our Saturday Salon series, and recent graduates of the ANU Jazz School, Imogen and Harry return for Lakeside at 5. The Theatre program invites expressions of interest for Queer PowerPoint. Little Wings Puppets return to Canberra with The Owl’s Apprentice theatre show and workshop for kids, and Chris Ryan returns with her wonderful Club Sandwich comedy.
The exhibition program celebrates the opening of three new exhibitions: Remedies by Hank Williams, Patternmakers group show featuring four prominent Canberra artist, and Forest Growth, the EASS Award exhibition granted to Melanie Olde. Public programs run alongside each exhibition. Term three short courses commence, offering a mixed media workshop with Michele England, wheel thrown ceramics with Ashley Bauman, eco-dying with Pinal Maniar. Art Play with Blaide Lallemand kick off again in Woden, and Fresh Funk 55+ also starts up again at TAC. Applications open for Battle Of Bands and regular monthly programs continue with life drawing, creative writing, artists networking and live music. Free drop in art making sessions happen every Friday morning.
September
September’s music program features CSO concertmaster Kirsten Williams and pianist Edward Neeman in Myth and Melody. We invite people to explore different musical themes in a relaxed conversational setting, in a new music appreciation series with Robert Harris. The Jazz Haus Canberra presents a night of nuanced high octane nu-bop funk fusion with Sydney band Hammerhead. The Saturday Salon series features the Newman Duo and Yunggabillli open mic night for emerging musicians returns.
The Theatre program offers a unique experience based on all the apologies that the world keeps offering with Sincere Apologies and the exhibition program’s Recollect: Bill Wood, and Everyday Extraordinary Canberrans open. Fresh Funk celebrate their 25th anniversary and we open up the centre for a day of free fun at the annual Grand Day Out event. Our regular monthly programs continue with life drawing, creative writing, artists networking and live music. Free drop in art making sessions happen every Friday morning.
October
In October, Aria nominated children’s entertainers The Vegetable Plot bring their musical cabaret show and music workshop to TAC. Our popular Art and Action and songwriting workshops also offer school holiday fun and the Battle of the Bands Heats electrify the Space over three nights. The music program also welcomes the timeless voice of Jazz artists Sandie White, and Sandra France celebrates 25 years of composition in Calm. The exhibition program brings together works by four Canberra artists known for creating quirky and whimsical bird art in Curious Birds. Ordinary Extraordinary and Faces of The South also open in the galleries.
Term-based art, drama and dance classes – for kids and adults – resume for Term 4 and a new batch of short courses offer Fiddling with Felt, Multi-coloured Relief Printing and Light, Camera, Animation. Fresh Faced Young Choreographer Initiative showcases the creativity of emerging choreographers and regular monthly programs continue with life drawing, creative writing, artists networking and live music. Free drop in art making sessions happen every Friday morning.
November
November’s music program showcases the 2025 Battle of the Bands finalists in a Lakeside Jam. CSO Down South presents acclaimed flautist Sally Walker and harpist Rowan Phemister in Tapestry; and Robert Harris continues his musical gatherings with a program that honours Remembrance Day. The Jazz Haus Canberra welcomes Sydney-based band Volant for a concert and workshop, while Polar Night and Midnight Sun is an opportunity to hear a Norwegian supergroup fuse traditional and contemporary music in a rare concert featuring Hardanger fiddler Benedict Maurseth and her band. Dr Rachel Thoms presents a myth busting guide to breath management in the Diaphragm Delusion Rethinking Breathing in Singing workshop, and Bella Groove joins us for the final Lakeside at 5 event for the year.
In theatre, Queer PowerPoint presents “a stupidly funny and extremely satisfying riot of information. ” This three-night spectacular is a chance to see Canberra’s queer creativity unleashed across the region’s premier arts venues – BAC, TAC & The Q. The Yuma Yarn exchange is a full-day weaving workshop at Tharwa Community Hall. Remedies by Hank Williams, the Patternmakers group show and Forest Growth by Melanie Olde continue in the galleries. The exhibition program invites you to an artist talk with Cam Michael and regular monthly programs continue to offer life drawing, creative writing, and free drop in art making sessions every Friday morning.
December
Liz Lea’s Woden’s World goes global in in Woden Town Square, the full cast of Fresh Funk perform their end of semester dance extravaganza at Erindale Theatre and Rachael Thoms and Tom Fell wind up an amazing year of music with Sketches from The Fringe, TAC’s final hurrah before we close for the year. December is also the time to re-enrol in your favourite class, as places are limited and classes do fill up quickly in the new year. It’s also a time for TAC to acknowledge the wonderful work of our volunteers and creative community.
