About the Artists
Pat Powell
From ska to blues, Hip-hop to soul and RnB to reggae, multi award winning vocalist Pat Powell is one of Australia’s most accomplished vocal talents. Patou’s genius as a vocalist – a unique combination of soulful understatement and compelling passion combined with an extraordinary depth of musical versatility, and empowering lyrics have been delivering messages of joy and social justice to audiences all over the world for over four decades.
Hailing from the close-knit and highly musical Jamaican community of 1960s/70s Bristol, Patou’s songs were seeded in him as a young man. Persecuted by the cops on the streets throughout his teens, Patou would find solace in the Jamaican dance tunes played by his folks, and in the RnB clubs that he snuck out of home to DJ in. Pat left the racism of the UK as soon as he could, although ‘stupidly’ found his way to Australia with its own racism issues. Father to four children from different mothers with varying ethnic backgrounds, Pat’s children all identify differently and raise a discussion about racism and where identity comes from.
He has supported James Brown, Queen, The Eurhythmics, Boy George, Crowded House, Spit Enz, Horace Andy and Luciano, Tina Arena, George Benson and more. In the late eighties & nineties he toured Australia, Asia & Europe as Kylie Minogue’s primary backing vocalist and since then in more recent years he’s toured extensively throughout Australia, Canada, America, Turkey and the UK.
Pat has recorded over 18 singles, featured on over seven albums, his debut album “About Time” was released in June of 2018. His current projects include: The Melbourne Ska Orchestra, The Pat Powell Band, The Protesters, Illya Szwec’s Groove Depot, Jazrie Sound System, Chocolate Jazz: From the blues to bebop. Pat Powell singing for The Melbourne Ska Orchestra has been nominated for 5 Aria’s and taken 2 of them home, plus 4 nominations for The Victorian Age Music Awards and won 3.
