YUMA YARN is a First Nations multi artform workshop delivered by Wiradjuri artist Rechelle Turner and musician Tahalianna Soward-Māhanga.

Designed to introduce the community to the joyful meditative practice of slow-stitched coiled weaving, this free event is open to everyone. Using raffia, Rechelle will help you to master: making a center, and growing and shaping your own coiled piece.

Come along and learn step by step the basic weaving and coil weaving techniques to make a basket. And while you are making, enjoy wonderful live music by Tahalianna.

About the Artists

Rechelle Turner is a contemporary Wiradyuri artist living on Ngunnawal Country.  In 2020 she began a Graduate Certificate in Wiradjuri Language Culture and History to reconnect with her culture in an incredible and life-changing journey. As an artist and Wiradyuri nation builder, she says it is her responsibility to help to strengthen Wiradyuri language and cultural practices in our people and to ensure the continual passing on of cultural knowledge.

Tahalianna Soward-Mahanga, a proud Wiradjuri and Tongan woman, has been singing, dancing, and performing on stage since the age of six, with her first solo singing performance at the National Museum of Australia for NAIDOC week. Tahalianna has backed many artists in her young years, she has danced interstate and represented her state at Hip Hop International, Battlegrounds, and Australian Dance Crew Championships taking out 2nd place solo and 1st place Mega Crew at the age of 10.
