Deadly Funny is back! Cheeky, loud, black and proud – Deadly Funny is Australia’s premier First Nations comedy competition, presented by the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, is back looking for the most hilarious Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytellers from across the country. All you need is five minutes of funny material.

Whether it’s stand-up, musical, sketch, physical/dance, character-based, or simply sharing a funny yarn, the stage is yours! Open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders over the age of 18, don’t miss your chance to try your hand at comedy and receive free mentoring from two seasoned First Nations comedians in a 90+ minute workshop.

During the workshop Jay Wymarra and Andy Saunders will provide a supportive and creative environment. They will share their insights, offer personalised feedback and help you refine your ideas. They’ll also help you refine your ideas before you unleash your talent onstage.

Need another reason to get involved? The winner of the National Grand Final will receive a massive $3,000. So step up, grab the mic and show the world your Deadly Funny!

Be part of the audience in a showcase event. Hosted by professional First Nations comedians Jay Wymarra and Andy Saunders, this free one-hour special event will be a chance for workshop participants to perform their routine in front of an audience. Experiencing the thrill of live comedy and receive immediate feedback from the crowd. This is your moment to shine, share your unique perspective and make the audience laugh with your original material.

The workshops and showcase concert will be held at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre on Thursday 17 October. Workshop: 4pm-6pm. Show: 7pm. Both are free.

Workshop Details

    BEFORE THE WORKSHOP

    • Prepare 3-5 minutes of original material (stand-up, musical, sketch, physical/dance, or character-based)
    • Decide whether to perform as an individual, duo or trio

    DURING THE WORKSHOP

    • Be open to feedback and willing to refine your material
    • Actively engage in brainstorming and rehearsal sessions

    BEFORE THE SHOWCASE

    • Finalise and practice your routine
    • Prepare for onstage performance and audience interaction
    • Practice microphone technique

    THE RULES

    • Open to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders aged 18 and over
    • Routines must be 3-5 minutes in length
    • Acts can include 1-3 people
    • Material must be original
    • Acts can be stand-up, musical, sketch, physical/dance or character based
    • Have the best time!

    Showcase Concert

      The showcase will be a one-hour special event hosted by two professional First Nations comedians in a lively and supportive atmosphere. You’ll perform your routine in front of an audience, experiencing the thrill of live comedy and receiving immediate feedback from the crowd. This is your moment to shine, share your unique perspective and make the audience laugh with your original material.
