About the choir

Sing with Toby is a community choir. Term-based weekly rehearsals are held at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre from 5:30pm – 7:00pm on a Tuesday. The choir is free, and anyone aged 18 and over is welcome to sign up. Participants are welcome to come and try a session before committing to stay for the term or ongoingly.

Opera singer and choir conductor extraordinaire, Tobias Cole leads the choir especially for the Tuggeranong community; taking singers on a magical journey, incorporating a variety of public performances and other opportunities.

Thanks to a progressive and collaborative partnership with ANU Community Music Centre and Tuggeranong Arts Centre, this choir now has over 30 members that meet each week to rehearse and perform.

Participants are given the space and skills to explore the art of singing, through rounds, vocal exercises, and a diverse selection of choral music. Choir members enjoy the opportunity to examine some key elements of singing: their voices, vocal technique, language, rhythms and harmonies.  Most importantly, participants develop their ability to ‘hearken,’ or actively listen, applying it to free improvisation to enjoy being present, tapping into their intuition and resonating together. The choir is as much about engagement of participants, their wellbeing and the importance of community, as it is about the music and voice.

Want to join the choir?

Everyone over the age of 18 with an interest in singing is welcome to join Sing with Toby. If you would like to join the choir please fill out the enrolment form above and come along to the next rehearsal. If you don’t have access to a computer, please drop into the Centre or call 6293 1443.

About Tobias Cole

In his search for meaning in this technocratic materialist world Tobias Cole uses his unique understanding of music and its resonant powers to create joyful, exhilarating and ultimately transcendental experiences with groups of people of all ages. He sees every rehearsal and every performance, whether as a conductor, singer, actor or MC, as an opportunity to remind people of their humanity and inspire them to tap their enormous potential.

Performances for 2022 included presenting Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (Cole’s Opera Salon at Smith’s Alternative), singing the alto solos in CSO’s performances of Messiah, conceiving and performing Voices of London with his ensemble Transcendence at the National Portrait Gallery for the Shakespeare to Winehouse exhibition, recording The Changi Songbook (Flowers of Peace), and preparing choirs for Messiah (CSO), Barber of Seville (Opera Australia), Victory over the Sun (NGA with Sydney Chamber Opera), and POW Requiem (Llewellyn Hall).

This choir has made possible through a partnership with the ANU Community Music Centre.
