Fresh Funk Shows
Fresh Funk’s performance program produces a show at the end of each semester. Each show is a multi-faceted spectacular, rather than a “recital” – with a current theme relevant to young people, often adapted from well-known stories. Performed on stage at Erindale College by more than 300 Fresh Funk students; with each class getting multiple routines that speak to the show narrative which are learnt, practised, and developed into choreographed pieces through the semester. The use of video components, specialised lighting effects and staging come together with cutting-edge choreography to create a huge “wow” factor and forms the unique Fresh Funk experience for both audience and dancers.
Young Choreographers Initiative
Fresh Faced has become a centrepiece of the Fresh Funk program. Running every semester for over 20 years, the initiative offers emerging choreographers the opportunity to develop and perform an original dance work as part of the “Fresh Faced” showcase. From contemporary pieces to well-known musical theatre gems, and hip-hop anthems, each piece has its own theme with each young choreographer taking full control over all the elements of the creative process, from movement to lighting design and costumes. Fresh Faced is offered to the program’s advanced dancers as a free development project and applications are open to students who are keen to learn how a professional would create a show. The opportunity provides valuable insights into the professional dance industry and gets students working outside their comfort zone and with dancers from outside their normal class groups.
